Postby srainhoutx » Thu Jul 25, 2013 7:38 am

Today is the day that the new upgraded GFS and NCEP suite of models including the new NAM and other short range meso guidance will be available with a 'new look'.

SENIOR DUTY METEOROLOGIST NWS ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE
NWS NCEP CENTRAL OPERATIONS COLLEGE PARK MD
1139Z THU JUL 25 2013

DUE TO THE THREAT OF CWD NEXT WEEK FOR THE TROPICAL
SYSTEM IN THE ATLANTIC, NCEP/NCO WILL "GO LIVE" ON
THE NEW WCOSS SUPERCOMPUTERS TODAY, THURSDAY 7/25.

THE PRODUCTION SUITE ON WCOSS SYSTEM TIDE WILL BEGIN
SENDING OUT THE OFFICIAL OPERATIONAL PRODUCTS AT
ROUGHLY 1230Z. DATA DISSEMINATION FROM THE CURRENT
CCS SUPERCOMPUTER WILL CEASE AT THAT POINT, ALTHOUGH A
FEW MODELS WILL CONTINUE TO COME FROM THE CCS AS THEY
BLEED OFF OVER THE FIRST FEW HOURS AFTER THE SWITCH
TO WCOSS SYSTEM TIDE.

IN REFERENCE TO THE WCOSS GOING LIVE:

NCEP RECENTLY DISCOVERED THAT MODIFICATIONS MADE TO
THE WCOSS NAM LAND-SURFACE MODEL INADVERTENTLY CREATED
A NEAR-SURFACE COOL/MOIST BIAS OVER URBAN AREAS. THE
BIASES WILL BE MOST PRONOUNCED DURING HEAT WAVE/HIGH
HUMIDITY EVENTS AND ARE ISOLATED TO THE LARGEST
METROPOLITAN AREAS. A FIX FOR THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN
IDENTIFIED AND WILL BE IMPLEMENTED INTO THE NAM SOMETIME
IN THE NEXT 7-10 DAYS. SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE..
